Last year, I was inspired by the Christmas Tree triangle quilts and decided to make an improv triangle quilt. The latest Cotton and Steel lines were out and the navys, pinks and greens felt like a modern Christmas color palette. Each of the triangles were cut freehand and pieced according to what looked like the best size. (Translation: there was no precision here!) I finished the quilt top but struggled with quilting ideas. It was close to Christmas time so I left it in my unfinished objects “UFO” box.
Fast forward to this year. I recently moved my sewing space to the garage and was reorganizing my UFO boxes. I had just finished recording my podcast with Gwen Marston about hand quilting and decided it was time for me to finish up my UFO by trying hand quilting. After seeking advice through Instagram, I started to get the hang of hand quilting and found the process to be cathartic. The triangles were echoed hand quilted with matching embroidery floss. The remaining low volume prints were hand quilted with white and cream flosses.

I am grateful to add this mini quilt to our decorations for years to come.
