When I was walking to a Schoolhouse Session at Fall Quilt Market, Latifah Saafir introduced me to Kathy Doughty of Material Obsession. Even with the mad dash to get to my next lecture, I instantly fell in love with her smile and fun energy. There is no way you could have told me then that meeting Kathy would have such a profound influence on my creative journey. I knew about Kathy’s amazing history in this business including her store in Australia called Material Obsession, her many books and fabric lines from Free Spirit Fabric. What I did not know is the generosity, kindness, and inspiration I would receive from our conversations.
Well known for her love of color and modern interpretations of traditional quilts, Kathy and I talk about a range of topics including how she always wanted to be an artist while growing up and the experience of following the love of her life to Australia. She talks about her collaboration with Sarah Fielke and the evolution of her creative process. I love when she talks about the promise of joy with each new project and her fabric crusade for the love of brown. She gave me the permission to be “me” and so much more. Even though I have re-listened to our conversation several times already, Kathy’s words inspire me. I know we could have talked for several hours or days. I hope you enjoy the episode.
