Podcast Episode # 70 : Sonya Philip of 100 Acts of Sewing

Sonya Philip on the Crafty Planner podcast

Knowing I was going to drive for at least three hours to attend Craftcation in 2015, I set aside five interesting podcasts. There is something about listening to a podcast while driving a car. While I am focused on driving, an interesting background conversation soothes the traffic anxieties and makes me feel my commuting time has been productive. On that particular drive, I saved an episode of What’s Your Story, produced by Meighan O’Toole, with Sonya Philip as the guest.

At the time, garment sewing was still new to me. Being a plus sized woman, I struggled with fitting into garments designed for women with B cups and gentle hips. Since I definitely don’t fit that mold, I felt a bit lost and discouraged by my lack of skills. Enter Sonya. After listening to Sonya talk about not feeling she could sew yet wanting to make something followed by her obsession/determination to make 100 dresses in a year, I felt I had “met” a kindred soul.

When I saw Sonya listed as one of the teachers for Craftcation 2016, I knew I would make it a goal to meet her during the conference. I wanted to tell her how much her experience gave me hope and hope I did not completely “fan girl” all over her! Luckily, she is unassuming, gracious and adorable!

During our podcast, we talk about her journey, how the act of sewing changed her perspective about herself, her thoughts on “fast fashion” and the empowerment of making for yourself.

  1. I feel inspired to get back to sewing clothing and be less critical about my work, not so stuck on the “rules” that I learned about sewing so many years ago that tend to take some of the joy out of the process. Thank you Sonya. Ps. I love your patterns that I have purchased this far!

  2. I had the same takeaway others have already mentioned: my attempts do not have to be perfect. I can’t figure out my preferences if I don’t actually try and get going. Thank you, Sonya!

  3. I took a class recently with Sonya. This podcast makes me want to SEW! I’m grateful for the long weekend coming up. I have two pairs of pants and two Dress No. 1s all planned out.

Lori Kay, You won! I just emailed you so let me know if you don’t receive it! And tag me when you have your pants and dresses done. I would love to see them.

  4. I loved this episode. Right now, I am where Sonya was awhile ago. I’ve done Halloween costumes, stuffed animals, clothes for the kids, quilting, etc., but I’ve been intimidated to sew for me. I think my biggest take away was to just try! So I think I will!
